It seals in the serums applied beneath it, supplies the lipids the skin barrier needs to hold water, and — in the case of a day cream — forms the base layer for sun protection. Choosing well is less about price than about matching texture to skin type, season and time of day.

Day cream or night cream?

Day formulations are built to sit under makeup and stand up to the environment: lighter textures, antioxidants against pollution and free radicals, and frequently an SPF. Night formulations work with the skin's own repair cycle, when cell turnover peaks and barrier permeability increases. They tend to be richer and often carry the actives — retinoids, peptides, cellular extracts — that would be less stable or less tolerated in daylight. Using one cream for both is workable; using the right one for each is better.

Matching texture to skin type

Oily and combination skin generally does best with gel-creams and fluids that hydrate without adding oil. Normal skin tolerates most textures and can shift between lighter summer and richer winter formulas. Dry skin needs emollients and occlusives — richer balms and nourishing creams. Mature skin usually benefits from richer textures alongside active ingredients that support density and elasticity.

How to apply

Apply to slightly damp skin after cleansing and any serums, and work outward and upward rather than dragging downward. A pea-sized amount is enough for the face; the neck and décolleté need their own application rather than the leftovers. If your cream stings or leaves a film, the texture is likely wrong for your skin rather than the formula being at fault.
