Worth being straightforward about this: nothing in this category outperforms the basics. Consistent bed and wake times, a dark and cool room, and stopping caffeine by early afternoon do more than any preparation, and a supplement taken against a bad routine is working uphill. Where these products help is at the margin — easing the transition into evening, supporting a routine you are already keeping, or bridging a temporary disruption like travel or a stressful period.

Using them well

Herbal sleep preparations are generally taken thirty to sixty minutes before bed, and the traditional combinations are designed for nightly rather than occasional use. Aromatherapy works differently — a few drops on a pillow or in a diffuser, used as part of a consistent wind-down so the association builds. Do not combine several sedating preparations without advice, and do not take them with alcohol.

When to see a doctor instead

Food supplements complement a varied diet rather than replacing it. Insomnia lasting more than a few weeks, sleep that leaves you unrefreshed regardless of duration, or loud snoring with daytime sleepiness are medical questions rather than supplement ones — see a doctor. If you take prescribed medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are buying for a child, speak with your doctor or pharmacist first; valerian and St John's wort interact with several common medicines, including sedatives and antidepressants.
