Body skin gets less attention than facial skin and behaves differently. Creams carry more lipids and suit dry skin, winter, and areas that stay dry regardless of season.

Body oils work best applied to damp skin straight after showering, where they seal in water rather than sitting on a dry surface.

Balms and ointments are for the stubborn areas — elbows, knees, heels, hands — where an occlusive layer is what's needed.

Firming and contouring treatments rely on massage as much as formula; the application is part of the effect.

Dry body skin: what actually helps

Most body dryness is made worse by the shower rather than by insufficient product. Hot water and long showers strip the lipids that hold water in, and many body washes are more stripping than they need to be. Lowering the water temperature and shortening the shower does more for dry legs than upgrading the moisturiser. Apply within three minutes of getting out, while skin is still damp — that window matters more than the product. If dryness comes with itching, redness or flaking that does not respond, see a pharmacist or doctor rather than trying another cream.

Areas worth separate attention

Hands are washed many times daily and lose lipids faster than anywhere else; they need their own cream kept where you wash. Feet have the thickest skin on the body and respond to urea-based preparations rather than standard lotions. Neck and décolleté are closer to facial skin than body skin in structure — they thin early and show sun damage clearly, so treat them as an extension of your face routine and include them in your sun protection.
