Swiss Facial Cleansers & Toners

Cleansing is the step most people get wrong, usually by doing too much of it. The instinct is that a cleanser should leave skin feeling tight and squeaky — but that sensation is the sound of a stripped barrier, not a clean one. Skin that has been over-cleansed produces more oil to compensate, reacts more easily to actives applied afterward, and takes weeks to settle. Swiss dermatological formulation has tended in the opposite direction: mild surfactants, pH close to the skin's own, and cleansing that removes what needs removing and stops there.

Choosing a cleanser format

Cleansing milks and creams suit dry, mature and reactive skin — they dissolve makeup and sunscreen without surfactant action, and are removed with a cloth or rinsed. Gels and foams suit oily and combination skin, where a degree of surfactant is genuinely useful. Micellar water sits between the two: micelles lift oil and debris without rinsing, which makes it convenient but not a complete cleanse for anyone wearing sunscreen daily. Oil and balm cleansers dissolve like with like, and work best as a first step in a double cleanse.

What a toner is actually for

Toners had a bad decade. The alcohol-heavy astringents of the past genuinely did damage, and many people dropped the step entirely. Modern Swiss tonics do something different — they restore surface pH after cleansing, deliver a first light layer of hydration, and in some formulations provide gentle micro-exfoliation that keeps texture smooth between stronger treatments. A tonic is applied to damp skin immediately after cleansing, before serums.

Building the step properly

Cleanse twice in the evening if you wear sunscreen or makeup, once in the morning — or simply rinse with water if your skin is dry. Use lukewarm water, never hot. Give the cleanser thirty seconds on the skin rather than a quick pass; most formulas need that long to work. Follow immediately with a tonic and then a serum while the skin is still damp, and seal with a moisturiser.
